Students discussing where they can study medicine without entrance exam

For many aspiring students, the idea of studying medicine without an entrance exam sounds like a dream come true. Tests such as the UCAT, MCAT, or BMAT are stressful and often act as major barriers for applicants wishing to apply to medical schools. But is it really possible to skip these tests and still secure a place at a good medical university in Europe taught in English?

The short answer: yes, it is possible — but it depends on your academic background, the country, and the university. In this article, Desire2Study will explain how to study medicine in Europe without mandatory examination, which universities offer this option, and what students need to watch out for when evaluating their choices.

Are Application Exams Really Necessary?

Not always. While many well-established European medical schools do require assessments in biology, chemistry, or logical reasoning, there are several reputable institutions that will assess your admission to medical school based on your high school grades and subjects — especially in biology and chemistry. This means that for some applicants, there’s no need to sit med school teststests if their grades are strong and they meet other academic criteria.

In these cases, medical school admission without an entrance test becomes a real possibility.

Where Can You Study Medicine Without an Entrance Exam?

Desire2Study works closely with several reputable European universities that may offer medical university admission without entrance exam requirements, depending on your qualifications:

1. Riga Stradins University (Latvia)

Riga Stradins University building where you can study medicine without an entrance exam

A modern, internationally respected medical university located in Riga. RSU offers a 6-year MD programme entirely taught in English. While they typically require students to take a test, high-achieving students with top grades in biology and chemistry may be exempt. The admission to medical school here focuses on academic transcripts and a motivation interview.

A-level applicants are strongly recommended to have Biology, Chemistry, and Mathematics, ideally with a minimum grade profile of BBB. However, if you have only one science subject, your application will still be considered, as long as Mathematics is included.

2. Lithuanian University of Health Sciences (LUHS) – Kaunas

One of the best medical universities in the Baltics. LUHS offers programmes in medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine, and pharmacy. For some applicants, especially those from the EU or with strong science backgrounds, admission may be possible without an entrance interview and test. Biology and chemistry at high school level are required.

3. Academy of Silesia (Poland)

A newer private university offering a 6-year medical degree. Academy of Silesia often, depending on the intake, accepts students based on their high school subjects and grades. However, the university reviews each application individually. If your academic background is strong, you might qualify for a medical school without entrance exam route.

4. University of Nicosia (Cyprus)

Medical school admission without entrance exam in Cyprus

Highly respected and globally recognized, UNIC offers a 6-year MD and a 4-year Graduate Entry Medicine programme. The university uses a holistic approach. However, interviews and document evaluations are standard. The admission to medical school here is based on both academic achievement and personal motivation.

For A-level candidates, a typical offer is ABB, including Biology and one additional science subject.

International Baccalaureate (IB) applicants must have a minimum of 32 points overall, with at least 16 points at Higher Level. Biology and one other science subject at Higher Level are required.

The university also offers graduate entry medicine with no entrance exam.

Admission Without Entrance Exam: What to Watch Out For

While it’s exciting to find medical schools without entrance exams, students must be cautious.

Avoid universities that accept every applicant without reviewing grades or qualifications. These schools are often found in countries where the quality of education and post-graduate recognition are questionable.

For example:

  • Study medicine in Bulgaria or Romania might seem appealing due to lower tuition fees and easier entry, but many such med schools lack proper clinical support, graduate licensing pathways and face low level quality o medical education.

  • Likewise, and believe us, this is one of the worse options the student may choose, students who study medicine in Georgia often get disappointed when they discover that the medical degrees aren’t accepted in the UK, US, Canada or even EU. In addition, after 6 years of studying medicine , they are still required to do licensing practices in Georgia with a long lead times.

The takeaway? Not all medicine programmes with no admission exam offer high quality medical education and globally recognized diplomas.

Always ask about program quality, degree recognition, and graduate outcomes.

What Are the Entry Exams for Medical Schools?

In general, medical schools in Europe require subject-based entrance, mostly in biology and chemistry. Some may include general science or logical reasoning. These exams are designed to assess academic readiness.

However, many programmes without entry admission exist for students with excellent grades. So rather than preparing for months for an exam, your academic transcript might be your ticket to getting in into medical university.

Graduate Entry Medicine – No Entrance Exam?

If you're applying to Graduate Entry Medicine programmes, especially in places like Cyprus, you might get in without an exam if you already hold a relevant science degree. These accelerated 5-year programmes are ideal for career changers or students who already completed undergraduate studies.

Can I Study Medicine Without an Entrance Exam?

Yes — but it depends on your background. Universities will look at:

  • Your high school grades (especially biology and chemistry)

  • Your overall GPA

  • Whether you meet subject-specific criteria

  • Whether you’ve previously studied science at university level

It is possible, but each case is different. May be also worth to mentions that aspiring medical students need a good foundation in biology and chemistry so some considers pre medical courses to give them more confidence ad knowledge during the studies.
